Tom Dixon designs Shoreditch House

July 2007

Tom Dixon has designed the latest addition to Nick Jones’ series of clubs, Shoreditch House. Located on the top three floors of the old Biscuit Building in Shoreditch in London, the new private member’s club has been created with an eclectic mix of the local vernacular, the Soho House "home away from home" signature style and Tom Dixon’s own British, futuristic aesthetic.

The brief was to evolve the successful Soho House brand to suit the Shoreditch audience whilst maintaining the historic qualities of the Biscuit Building. Tom’s vision was to create a design that preserved the rawness of the building intrinsic to maintaining a sense of place. Using reclaimed and weathered materials like wood from Hastings Sea Defences and marble from India, Shoreditch House reflects an honest and natural approach to finishes, materials and furniture.

Tom Dixon says, "The east of London has long deserved a club of this ambition and quality ... it’s been an extraordinary experience to work with Nick to put together a club fit for this teeming community of creatives and entrepreneurs. As a place where people can relax, pamper, meet, eat and drink in supreme comfort against the backdrop of astonishing views of the modern city and 17th century London."

Shoreditch House occupies over 4,000 sqm, with 14 different spaces
including a private bowling alley named "The Biscuit Pin", a Cowshed Spa, House Kitchen, Gym, Brasserie Bar, Lounge and Private Meeting Rooms. From a Lichtenstein inspired Bowling Alley to the Square Bar of copper and petrol blues, each space has been curated with an individual approach to express the variety of moods needed cater to the varying times of day.

Paraphrasing a British library combined with sculpture reflective of redundant space, the sitting room combines vintage iron chandeliers with custom made ‘Polar Bear’ sofas in velvet mohair alongside design
classics by Norman Cherner, Franco Albini and Finn Juhl. The Games Room features vintage pin ball machines and table football whilst the House Kitchen, inspired by the original Italian Trattoria, shows striking
910mm diameter dome pendants spun from raw aluminium hanging above refectory style kitchen tables.
