The Baltic Sea Festival started with a performance by Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. The concert was given at the Berwaldhallen and simultaneously broadcast live on a big LED-screen near the Jewish Theatre.
The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is a symphony orchestra founded by the Argentinian born Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim and Palestinian/American literary theorist Edward Said. The orchestra consists of young musicians from the Middle East, both Israeli and Arab youths. Here they are given an opportunity to meet in perhaps the only neutral region remaining to them - within the world of music.
Daniel Barenboim and the 150 young musicians will present:
Sinfonia concertante - Joseph Haydn
Variations for Orchestra, op. 31 - Arnold Schoenberg
Symphony No. 4 E minor op. 98 - Johannes Brahms
