Different Trains by Steve Reich – A staged concert
Steve Reich / Pia Forsgren / The Fleshquartet / Ann Wåhlström
Pia Forsgren's critically acclaimed interpretation of Steve Reich's Different Trains returns to its original setting during one month this coming Spring, after having embarked on an international tour during the summer 2011.
Première on 18 April 2012.
The Fleshquartet performs the music in a glass installation by the artist Ann Wåhlström with lighting design by Hans-Åke Sjöquist. The costumes are created by Mikael T. Zielinski. The Fleshquartet's piece Tears Apart is also included in Forsgren's visual concert. It is an especially commissioned piece for The Jewish Theatre - a reflection on Reich's Different Trains. Different Trains opened at The Jewish Theatre in Stockholm on 4 October, 2008.
Steve Reich became a musical pioneer with the work Different Trains as he brought together acoustic music with digital sampling technology. Different Trains is based on Reich's bright childhood memories of traveling by train between the U.S. West and East Coasts - juxtaposed on his thoughts about the children that during the same time travelled by train to the extermination camps in World War II Europe.
