This year Tom Dixon undertakes a series of activities surrounding the London Design Festival and 100% Design. As Creative Director of 100% Design London, Tom Dixon also exhibits at the show launching the new 2007 collection. Tom Dixon will also take over Trafalgar Square building a one off low energy lighting public installation following the success of the Great Chair Grab in 2006.
Tom Dixon launches new 2007 Collection at 100% Design
The 2007 collection is defined by a ‘Metallic’ theme. Diving back into the
material that initiated his original interest in design, Tom Dixon has taken inspiration from a diversity of sources that range from the heroic use of cast iron by the engineers of the industrial revolution, to the skilled craftsmen of the Indian subcontinent.
This iconic collection illustrates the durable, malleable and versatile properties of a range of metals by exploiting a variety of production techniques including; casting, punching, anodising giving a hi-tech industrial finish, and hammered brass for the softer more human touch. The use of metal appears in several different forms and finishes offering products that reflect honest and solid British quality.
With a focus on the use of copper, Tom Dixon will launch the Copper Table Light and the Copper Blow Light as an extension to the existing Copper collection. The first light design in the Tom Dixon collection specifically sold with a low energy bulb, the Blow Light takes its design from the light used for the Trafalgar Square energy saving installation. Using a vacuum metalised film of pure copper on the interior of the light, the light will be available in a smooth and ribbed finish.
Unseen products before 100% Design will include the Punch Wall Light, made from Stainless Steel and inspired by the cooling fins of motorcycle engines, the Pipe Wall Light, Copper Table Light, and Copper Blow Light. Additional new products on show will include the Link Table, a no nonsense, high quality British coffee table made from solid cast aluminium, as well as Stout, the latest addition to the Beat collection and the Beat Vessels made from unpolished satin brass.

This year, Tom Dixon has been appointed Creative Director of 100% Design London, the UK’s largest design exhibition held at Earls
Court, London from 20-23 September 2007. 100% Design London includes the architectural innovations show, 100% Detail, 100% Light and 100% Materials. 100% Futures is a new addition to 100% Design that focuses on emerging design talent Tom Dixon will be responsible for the new exhibition design.
This year 100% Design London will be the largest it has ever been, the overall design by Tom Dixon follows the metaphor “city planning” and is inspired by the urban landscape. Featuring a city square as the central area with a theatre and restaurant reflecting the design of public buildings The concept is to ensure that all shows within 100 % Design London feel more navigable and intimate whilst striking a balance between commerce and culture.

Great Give Away of 1000 Tom Dixon low energy lights – the Tom Dixon Energy Saving Installation in Trafalgar Square
In September 2007, to launch the London Design Festival, Tom Dixon will take over Trafalgar Square, from Monday 17th September until Wednesday 19th September, with a large scale installation of 500 energy saving lights. In collaboration with the Energy Saving Trust and working with Glowblow energy light bulbs, the 500 lights will be skilfully displayed in a chandelier cluster hung from state of the art scaffolding.
Inspired by the shape of a light bulb, Tom has specifically designed ‘Blow’ a white opaque light, that uses a low-energy compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL). With plans afoot to ban the sale of traditional incandescent bulbs in the EU, the ‘Blow’ pendant light will bring further awareness to using CFL’s and sustainability within design.
The Blow lights will be powered by a renewable energy source and lit for 3 hours per day. 1000 lights will be given away to Londoners on a first
come first served basis. To further promote the use of CFL’s, Glowb will give away a 1000 CFL light bulbs a day, totaling 3,500 light bulbs being given away and used over the course of the installation. According to the Energy Saving Trust, the 3,500 Glowb bulbs will save 754 tonnes of CO2 in their collective lives, the equivalent of filling 150 hot air balloons or 4,300 double decker buses, compared to the 60watt incandescent equivalent, this is the equivalent of £212,000 saved in electricity bills.
The Glowb CFL light bulb offers a sleek and elegant design and gives off a soft light, unlike some older style CFL light bulbs. As Tom says, “Low energy bulbs suffer from an image problem, where it is commonly thought that they make an unattractive light. What better way to change this perception than to make an event that allows Londoners to witness a massive installation of 500 lamps allowing everybody to take a part of it home to illuminate their lives whilst using 80% less energy than they would previously have used. Free design for Londoners!”
The state of the art structure is provided by Creative Constructions who will build a light-weight environmentally friendly structure with their 3D-Connect© system to form the framework of a 9 metre high dome from which the Tom Dixon chandelier will hang. Using Catia, the advanced design program which is standard in the aerospace and automobile sectors, together with their 3DConnect© system Creative Constructions are able to design structures with a large amount of flexibility in a short time frame.
